We all should be seeking God’s will. It is, of course, impossible to know God’s full will, but it is indeed possible for us to pursue the lives in which he has designed and guided us to live. That has been the driving force in this months’s topic during our Year of Listening Up series. I have already posted some thoughts on seeking God’s will, so I thought now is a good time to check in on what some other bloggers have to say.
Here are seven posts about seeking God’s will in your life. If you have written one or know of others, please do share them in the comments. What We Get Wrong About ‘Finding God’s Will’ (Relevant Magazine – Chandler Vannoy): Using Kevin DeYoung’s book, Just Do Something, as the backdrop, Vannoy relates to the anxiety that many of us feel when we don’t know the road ahead. And then he helps us undestand why not knowing is a good thing and that we have a big, big God. “If we knew every step and detail of our lives, there would be no reason for us to have faith in God. When times get tough, we realize we need someone greater than ourselves to direct where we are going.”
How to Find God’s Will (Andrew Wommack Ministries): Here, Wommack explains why it is important to seek and live the will of God. From there, we must start seeking God for it. He’s not hiding it, but we do have some seeking to do. Among many passages, Wommack references Jeremiah 29:12-13 for how it tells us how we need to seek God:
8 Essential Components for Discerning God’s Will (The Southern Blog – David Sills): Sill agrees with Spurgeon, who said “every Christian is either a missionary or an impostor” but he doesn’t think everyone must sell everything to go live on the other side of the world. In this post, he shares the eight counsels he offers to others when they ask his advice on seeking God’s will.
How to Find God’s Will for Your Life (Life in Grace): If you are conflicted with anguish over seeking God’s will for your life, here is a post you must read to remember that God sees even the most menial of tasks in your life as significant work that just might open the door to serving your neighbor.
What Is God’s Will for My Life? (Desiring God – Jonathan Parnell): Parnell references David Platt’s Follow Me in presenting the transformation of will in our coming to Christ. “…finding God’s will for our lives is to understand that in Christ our own wills are radically recreated. As far as which way to go after this semester, or whether to take that job or move to that country, there aren’t any shortcuts to the mind of God.”
How to Find God’s Will in Your Life (What Christians Want to Know – Jack Wellman): Through the course of salvation and transformation, God’s will is revealed. Wellman also refences I Thes. 4:3-5, I Thes. 5:18, I John 2:17, and Matt. 28:18-20 among others.
Taking the Mystery Out of Knowing God’s Will (Grace to You – John MacArthur). In this wonderful sermon from John MacArthur, we are treated to many passages and concepts to help us understand the importantance of seeking God’s will. Click through to watch, listen and/or read. Here’s a brief excerpt:
What is God’s will for your life? That’s really the big question. It’s really not the question about purpose. It’s a question about the will of God. It’s not about what should you be based on your skills and your gifts and all of that. It’s really about what is God’s will for your life. That’s a very foundational question. And we all, as Christians, ask it. And it has to do with everything in our lives – all our relationships, all our choices and directions in life need to be guided and directed by a compelling desire to do the will of God. In fact, I would say that’s probably the most foundational and essential pursuit in Christian living – doing the will of God. (emphasis added)
There are many other thoughts, observations and comments about seeking God’s will, so please just let these seven be the beginning. If you come across others, please share them in the comments so we can continue to pursue a refining life, on purpose, together.
