Just finished Goodspeed: Making Christ’s Mission Your Own by Britt Merrick, (David C. Cook). Here are some thoughts:
We were made for a mission beyond the mediocrity of routine life. Careers, events and misplaced ambitions detract us from Christ’s mission to be “on mission” for Him in this world. In Godspeed, Britt Merrick challenges us. He helps us see beyond our day-to-day lives and makes sense of how we can join in God’s grand purpose — His plan to restore, redeem, and renew the world.
God’s mission to save the world started with Jesus, but it doesn’t end there. Jesus, in turn, sends us. He said, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” God wants to continue His redemption story through each of us— as we live more like Jesus, right where we are.
Godspeed reminds that we are empowered by the Holy Spirit, encourages – and teaches – us to listen to that same Holy Spirit to recognize that opportunities to further God’s kingdom exist in our own back yards on a daily, hourly and even a minute-by-minute basis. Unlike our society, the currency of God’s kingdom is servanthood. As servants, we are common – flawed – people who, through Christ and by being on mission, can accomplish extraordinary things so long as they are God centered and not ignored.
Want a sneak peak? Here is a sample chapter of Godspeed. Give it a read. If it moves you, buy the book.. Read it and go forth with the awareness that people are not the enemy… they are the prize.
What others have said:
I am grateful for pastors like Britt who are calling people to understand the Christian life along the lines of mission and even more for his particular witness to embodying it. ~ Lifeasmission
I appreciate the missional resurgence but I also am concerned with some of its disjointed emphasis which are exemplified in Godspeed. If you are already sold on missional theology (particularly everything as mission focus) then Godspeed is red meat; otherwise, you may find some of the categories and distinctions unhelpful. ~ Grace4Sinners
This is a book about listening to the Holy Spirit, about praying, and about seeking those who need the good news of Jesus the most. It’s about making an impact right where God has sent you. ~ The High Calling
